Keep gauze packs in place for 30-45 minutes with moderate
pressure. Change gauze every 30 minutes until it is light pink
in color. You will be biting on the gauze for approximately 2
to 4 hours.
-
Avoid forcefully spitting, rinsing, or sucking through a straw
for 24 hours. If you use tobacco products it is recommended
that you discontinue use for at least five days after surgery.
-
Approximately 24 hours after surgery start rinsing your mouth
with warm water or warm salt water 4 to 5 times a day and
gently brush over and around the extraction site. It is very
important that you keep your mouth as clean as possible to
help aid in the healing process.
-
To
minimize swelling it is recommended that you apply an icepack
extra orally to the area 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off for
the first 36 hours after surgery. After this time you may
apply a heating pad or hot towel 3-4 times a day for 10
minutes at a time if you so desire.
-
It
is important that you maintain a balanced diet during the
first 24 hours. Liquids, soups, and soft foods are
recommended. Gradually progress to a regular diet. You should
drink plenty of fluids (6-8 glasses per day).
-
Rest as much as possible on the day of surgery. Keep lips
moist with an ointment or cream to prevent drying or cracking.
-
Take prescribed medications only as directed by your doctor.
-
If
your surgery included general anesthesia we DO NOT recommend
that you drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 24
hours or as long as you are taking narcotic medication.
-
If
unusual complications occur call the doctor at (270) 554-2026
or go to an emergency room.
-
Please see that sutures are removed in one week if used.
